So far I have my images at 75K which is 10K less than my current design. I'm making heavy, heavy use of transparent PNG files (I'm completely neglecting IE6 at the moment) and some of them are repeating (won't work in IE6) and some are fixed height/width (will work in IE6)

The problem with a lite version is that most users would have to completely load the home page (i.e all the full files) before deciding to choose a lite version and thus caching all the large files anyways. I think I will probably just end up creating a lite version that visitors with accounts can choose sort of like your site does with themes.
Also, for the site design, if done right, you can compress the image down well so that it loads quickly while still looking good enough. Also, if parts of it are always going to be hidden, then you could get away with slicing it up and/or having a big white space (if it's a PNG/GIF, solid areas of color compress well). The lite/full version idea would be nice too, otherwise. I imagine there is some way of detecting the client's bandwidth on the main page, and somehow switching which CSS file to use depending on how fast it is. I think MSN used to do something like that to give you the "full" site or the "lite" site. (not just CSS)

So, why does every company feel like they need to jump on the "we're hip and have a Second Life presence" bandwagon? Really, how many people does it really impress vs. the cost to set up shop and maintain it. On the plus side, if you get assigned to run it, you can get paid to play a videogame.

@Eric: Perhaps there can be a middle ground and it can be limited to the external .js file that the functions are defined in. I can see your point if you have random pages on the site referencing the functions, there meaning would be lost.

I think It's ok if you're calling the functions further down in the same file, so if you didn't know what they meant, you could at least reference them.

p.s I'm using them in this fashion on the Huebsch redesign.

Lookie lookie who's posting on your javascirpt post again :)

I think that this works fine for reducing clutter on the page, however it becomes harder for someone editing your code later on. JavaScript developers are going to know what document.getElementById or document.write, etc. are. However, they're not going to know what gd, gs, gv, and dw are.

If it's your own site, then it's a great thing, but if you're developing with a team then I don't know if I'd go this route.
